John Lennon's 70th Birthday

You have probably listened to Perfect Circle's cover of "Imagine." Watch the video here.

Among the many reissues of Lennon's material, this album strikes me most. When John recorded his songs-- from his earliest Beatles days to his '70s solo work-- he added many audio effects to cover his voice because he was insecure about it.
Yoko has stripped his voice down to its rawest form.

I don't own it-- I am going to buy it today, though, because I've heard good things about it. Check it out here.

I have read a few biographies about Lennon as well as the huge Beatles Anthology tome. I have also listened to recordings of his actual interviews, including his final interview, which was recorded a few hours before he was killed. Of the many stories I have read and heard about him, the one that strikes me most about him was one of Paul McCartney's anecdotes.

Paul and John had achieved the heights of their fame. They were sitting across from each other. John was wearing his shaded "granny glasses"-- his trademark circular-lensed glasses. One of their conversations devolved into a loud argument. Suddenly, as the argument became more and more heated, John paused, leaned forward, then pulled his granny glasses to the tip of his nose so that his eyes were visible. He smiled as he said, "hey, it's still me."
