Celebrating this Dumb Nation

During July 1995 I watched Rush Limbaugh's television show. He wanted to demonstrate Americans' ignorance about history, so he did a Leno-like "man on the street" series of brief interviews. The #1 question: "Why do we celebrate Independence Day/ what does it represent?"

He interviewed maybe 5 people who were utterly clueless about it before he found someone who knew its meaning. REMEMBER, it was RUSH LIMBAUGH'S show-- cons were demonstrating Americans' idiocy when it was advantageous for them. "The idiots like Clinton," blah blah. Now they consider it "unpatriotic" or whatever.

In the great spirit of this celebratory week, I recommend this book to you.

Among other things, its author indicates that most Americans don't know that we dropped nuclear bombs on the Japanese and that we have three branches of government.

I'm not even mildly surprised because I think of the '04 election almost daily.
