On the Uber Economy

Several years before the economic crash of 2008, Vladimir Putin said that he didn't understand how the American economy was even functioning because it was just based on people who were selling houses to each other. Brilliant man.

During the last few years I-- and many people with whom I've spoken-- have noticed a sharp uptick in the population in Los Angeles. I don't have hard stats in front of me at the moment, but it's reasonable to assume that the growth is due in large part to Uber/Lyft's business operations here. There is a small fortune to be made from it in this city. I know people who have a master's degree or Phd. and rely on Uber/Lyft as either a major source of income or sole source of income.

And it's utterly insane. I know little about economics, but I know that an economy that consists of the rich and Uber drivers who transport the rich is unsustainable. If you are a Lyft and/or Uber driver, and you think that the gravy train will continue in perpetuity then you're a fucking moron. Eventually the availability of such drivers (and it's booming right now) will catch up to or exceed the demand for them, then that particular line of work will finally crash. Lyft/Uber will either slash their workforce or demand that their drivers have cars that are only from year 20__ or newer or force them to live on tips alone.

It might happen next week. It might happen in five years. But it will happen.

It's a major economic issue that the Trump administration should address. I know that it will be in a rush to put the uneducated populace back to work in industries. But I want it to also consider the extremely educated and desperate.
