I'm related to the Kennedy family, which is a fact that was revealed to me when I was 18 at my mother's father's funeral by his brother and sister. They both died just a few years later themselves. Strangely, I'm actually more closely related to the man who founded Chick Fil A (S. Truett Cathy), but if you know anything about Chick Fil A's politics then you know why I'm prouder of the Kennedy connection.
Almost every conspiracy theory that I encounter is rooted in an idiot's need to create his own set of "facts" or to believe another person's "facts" whole cloth based on his/her emotional perception of the event. Very few believers of such conspiracy theories actually "came around" to the theory. Almost all of them were prejudiced about the account of the event from the media/government, and they leaned toward their own theories from the outset.
9/11 conspiracy theorists are probably the most reviled lunatics by the general public and myself. They are the perfect example of conspiracy theories gone insane. I've completely dissected and torn apart their theories at an Obama rally in Seattle and once in an internet chat. They were so thoroughly trounced by my counterarguments that they actually accused me of being a government agent. Seriously.
When 9/11 occurred I was finishing my last semester as undergraduate with a major in psychology. I worked with psychology doctorates and doctorates-in-training. There was nothing about the events that occurred on the planes that seemed incredible to any of us. It was all perfectly aligned with everything that we knew about human nature and how people behave in large groups.
Yet I know that 9/11 theorists seek out those 1% of psychologists-- and architects and physicists, etc. who will argue batshit inane things (usually for financial gain), and 9/11 conspiracy theorists pretend that the 1% represents 100% of the professionals in that field.
THAT BEING STATED, I am willing to believe that there was a government conspiracy to kill John Kennedy during November 22, 1963. There was a time when I actually believed that it happened, but my belief was shaken when I visited Dealey Plaza five years ago and saw the tininess of the area myself. As Alec Baldwin said in a recent "Here's The Thing" podcast, it's such an incredibly small area that it seems as if even an amateur could have made the shot that Oswald supposedly made, let alone an expert sharpshooter who had military training and scored nearly-perfect grades for marksmanship (Oswald).
If you view clip 2 of the videos that I've posted here you will notice that the conspiracy theorist says that the road where Kennedy's motorcade traveled was actually much further away from the current road that is near the grassy area. Even prior to my visit there I had heard such things, but I have not confirmed that it was as far away as he indicated. Also, Oliver Stone says that a large tree (that has since been removed) would have obstructed Oswald's view anyway.
There are "top secret" documents about the assassination that won't be completely released until 2017. Until that time, I'm only willing to believe that there was a governmental conspiracy and coverup about this mess. Hell, I read just a few days ago that even Richard Nixon believed that Lyndon Johnson was probably responsible for it.
As it is, I'm 90% certain that Oswald didn't act alone ("back and to the left")-- yet I have no idea if it was all part of a much larger scheme.
Here are vid clips that I made five years ago. I've sat on these things for a long time because I considered making a mini-documentary about my trip. But I don't have any experience or training in making a documentary, so it would be embarrassing to me.
Take 'em as they are:
