I have taken some flack lately because I stated that acting classes are run mostly by lunatics and are worthless.
Well, consider one of the experiences that I had in them when I was learning how to be a filmmaker.
The batshit crazy teacher sat two students directly across from each other in chairs that were placed in front of the class. We were supposed to 1) maintain eye contact at all times and 2) answer every question that she posed with "he/she does/is" or "I do/am."
Alright. It sounds psycho enough already, right? Well, consider some of the questions that were posed to me and another guy as we sat a few feet away from each other:
"Who masturbates more?"
"Who cries more?"
"Who is a better lover?"
I kid you not. NOW, this is just one example of many that I could cite. How the hell such exercises were supposed to be of use to anyone for anything (let alone acting) is beyond me.
Many of the better or best actors I have encountered attended acting school, so I am not stating that it's TOTALLY worthless... just mostly worthless. I think that someone can harness and polish his natural skills in a class, but he cannot actually learn HOW to act there-- it's like writing lessons or singing lessons.
