My 2009 List

I'm going to use the same categories that I used last year and add a new one: "best videogame of the year." When I do the "best of the decade" list tomorrow I'm going to expand these categories to include "most disappointing album" and "most overrated album."

Best quotation of 2009: "Music is real. Everything else is tricks, games and bullshit." -Marc Maron

Best Album:

"Keep it Hid" by Dan Auerbach. This album might be considered "most underrated of the year" as well.

Best song: "When the Night Comes" by Dan Auerbach

Best cinematic performance:

Christian McKay as Orson Welles in "Me and Orson Welles"

Most disappointing movie: Watchmen. It goes without saying, really. Excellent graphic novel, mediocre movie.

Most overrated movie: Paranormal Activity. LOOK, as a low-budget filmmaker myself, I love that this movie is making a killing. More power to it. Yet, it has "Blair Witch Project" stamped all over it. What happened to Blair Witch Project? No one remembers nor cares.

Best movie of 2009: Man... I don't know. I've looked at a credible list of possible Oscar nominees for 2010, and it SCARES me. A documentary about Mariah Carey is on it. Seriously.
The only movie that I have seen that I would classify as "great" this year was Michael Jackson's "This is It," but I'm hesitant to say that it was the best movie because it wasn't even really designed to be a movie, no acting or writing was involved, etc.
So... This Is It... I guess...

Best sports performance: Joe Mauer of the Minnesota Twins, a hometown boy who has taken the late, great Kirby Puckett's place for "#1 reason the Twins should exist as a franchise."
Honorable mentions: Derek Jeter of the Yankees who proved this year that he isn't overrated, and Brett Favre, who at age 40 is having the best year of his career.

Best videogame of the year:

Dragon Age: Origins.

Compelling storyline? Check.
Interesting characters? Check.
Realistic graphics? Check.
Adult themes? To the max.
Fuck Modern Warfare 2.
